The Layton Building

Kilkenny College were delighted to welcome members of the school and wider community to the College on Monday afternoon for a joyous occasion as we officially opened our new Music and Arts Building in 2024.

Members of the Board of Directors, Board of Management, Development Foundation, Incorporated Society and Parents Association were joined by students from our Art and Music Departments, teaching and support staff and generous donors to the project for the official blessing and opening by the Rt Revd Adrian Wilkinson, Bishop of Cashel, Ferns and Ossory. The Layton Building which incorporates Milne Hall (Music Room) and the Kenny Studio (Art Room) will greatly enhance our facilities at Kilkenny College and we look forward with great excitement to its full occupation by the Music and Art Departments in the coming days and weeks.

In Memory of Ms Essy Layton

The Layton Building is called after the late Ms Essy Layton who was a great neighbour and friend to Kilkenny College for many years. She provided Kilkenny College with both moral and tangible support and was passionate about education and the power it had to transform lives. Her particular love was the Music Department, and she was extremely generous in her support to the College.

Milne Hall

Milne Hall is called after our former colleague and Music teacher Mr David Milne. David dedicated his teaching career at Kilkenny College to the music department. When he arrived, music was not even an option for Leaving Certificate pupils. When he retired there were classes all the way up to Leaving Certificate, a school orchestra, junior, senior and chamber choirs. David also taught piano, singing, double bass and developed the Instrumental Music Programme into what it is today, being one of the largest programmes in the country.

The Kenny Studio

The Kenny Studio is named after our recently retired colleague and Art Teacher Ms Trini Kenny. Trini has shown commitment, passion, fun and expertise while teaching Art at Kilkenny College. Her talent and dedication inspired so many students and pushed them to achieve far beyond their own expectations.

Thank You

Kilkenny College are indebted to our Design Team, CJ Falconer & Associates and the main contractors Eugene Foley Construction for their professionalism and guidance throughout this project.
