All-Ireland Schools Showjumping, 2008.

Jude Doyle -IHB Director, Shane Cooke -Gain, Denis Cummins and Joe Walsh IHB
chairman along with the winners of the All-Ireland interschools Team
Competition at Enniscorthy on 03/05/08

No less than 56 teams from many parts of Ireland competed at the beautiful
County Showgrounds at Enniscorthy, County Wexford in what is the Irish
equivalent of the lawn tennis championships at Wimbledon.

With so many artificial surfaces and sand-based arenas around it is a
reminder of what real horsemanship is about to compete on the natural
surface on the hill overlooking the Slaney river. This is part of what makes
Enniscorthy so special in the equestrian calendar for schools. That and the
timing of the competition with the promise of summer days to come.

It was no different this year on a sundrenched if at times windy day, when
the hospitality was great and the competition was keen. The administration
carried out expertly by Edel Cleary and Sheila Ryan, under the benevolent
eye of Chairman John Jude Doyle, saw a seamless and relaxed atmosphere
throughout the day. The innovation of a second course walk won great
approval from those teams travelling long distances.

Joe Walsh, the Chairman Horse Sport Ireland, who presented the prizes said
"I am privileged to be here and see first hand your excellent competition
and the beautiful site, the County Showground's, Enniscorthy.
John Jude, his Secretary and the excellent Committee are to be complimented
for their effort down the years - you are now in your 17th. Year of the
Colleges Open Showjumping Championship.

Doing and working to achieve the high standards I have witnessed here today
takes huge dedication and effort by a huge lot of people. The various
competitions from team to Individual Senior and Junior as well as Best
Turned Out and the girl's team of the "Women of the Year Award" took a huge
effort by Judges, Secretaries, Staff and all voluntary.

Horse Sport Ireland under your fellow Wexford man Damien McDonald are
delighted to be able to offer financial support for such an event where the
emphasis is on youth and looking after the men and women of tomorrow. May
you prosper and the next 17 years be as successful as the last", he
concluded.

Under the shadow of Vinegar Hill the best of Irish schools were to compete
on an excellent course designed by Damien Beevor, assisted by Jim Kavanagh.

The Enniscorthy experience saw a team championship sponsored by Gain
Equestrian Feeds, and senior and junior individual championships, sponsored
by Slaney Meats. There were also prizes for 'the Year of the Woman in
Sport', sponsored by Horse Sport Ireland.
After two rounds of jumping there were ten teams in the jump-off from six
schools - Good Counsel, New Ross; Kilkenny College, St. Leo's Carlow, St.
Finian's Mullingar: Eureka Kells; and Colaiste Bhride, Carnew.
After an exciting jump-off it was Kilkenny College's ( Brian Murphy, along
with the Clonroche family of Kara, Jordan and Luke Cummins, who jumped
clear and won in a combined time of 75.59 seconds.

It was the second day of success for the Wexford family who won the
All-Ireland Hunter Trials in March. The team won praise from John Jude
Doyle, Chairman of the National Committee who praised his neighbours from
Clonroche and said they were a credit to their family, their school and
their county.

In second place were Good Counsel College, New Ross (John Roche, John
Redmond, Jason Higgins, and Jack Bolger) also clear with 89.36 seconds.

Third place went to Colaiste Bhride Carnew (winners in 2007) who were on
four faults with 71.44 seconds.

In fourth place were this years Hoofprints League winners Eureka Kells (
Niamh O'Connell, Jane Millington, Nola Taaffe, and Sophie Dillon) who were
on four faults with a time of 74.16 seconds.

St. Finian's College Mullingar were fifth place( Giuseppe Orlandi, Matthew
Cunningham, Diarmuid Conway, and Seamus Keena) with four faults in 108.45
seconds.

In sixth place were Kilkenny College (Michael Hutchinson, Roderick Hogan,
Charlotte Younghusband, and Stephen Brennan) with 8 faults in a time of
73.54 seconds.

In the Senior Individual Championship the winner was Stephen Brennan, riding
Gaulstown Prophet for Kilkenny College, while in the Junior Individual
Championship the winner was Jonathan Moore riding Coolio for Good Counsel
College, New Ross.

The winners of the Women in Sport Award were the Colaiste Bhride Carnew team
of Aine Dagg, Louise Redmond, Mairead O'Hara, and Caoimhe Kenny.

UNIQUE THREE IN A ROW FOR KCK RIDER

Congratulations to those involved in equestrian activities during the Easter break including the school team which won the All Ireland Inter Schools Hunter Trials Championship and Luke Cummins who won the senior individual title for the third year in succession.

February 2008

In the recent White Cup Show jumping competition, the team of Rod Hogan, Michael Hutchinson, Stephanie Hutchinson and Jack Hutchinson  won the competition in a very close finish with Rod Hogan jumping the fastest round.

Congratulations to Sixth Year David Power who has been awarded one of two Show Jumping Association International Training Scholarships awarded to Under 23 riders in the Leinster region. David will travel to Germany later this month

Our young showjumpers were in action in Mullingar earlier in the Christmas Term. Rod Hogan, Vincent Byrne, Stephanie Hutchinson and Laura Walsh gained first and Luke Jordan, Kara Cummins Brian Murphy came third.

HICKSTEAD August 2007:

The foot and mouth outbreak in Surrey last week saw a change in plans for five Irish schools hoping to attend the All-England Championships for Schools at Hickstead. The schools were Colaiste Bhride, Carnew, St. Finian’s College, Mullingar, Newbridge College, Kilkenny College and Loreto College, Mullingar. With eleven teams between them the riders and their families had completed preparations for travelling and were due to set sail on Sunday evening. However as a precautionary measure they voluntarily withdrew from the premier English event. This responsible decision took place on the Saturday when news of the source and extent of the outbreak remained unclear.

Rather than give up a small group emerged led by Helen O’Neill of Newbridge College who were determined to ensure that there would be a contest for the Irish riders. With the full approval of Lizzie Bunn in Hickstead, the five Irish schools competed in a unique competition in Coilog Equestrian Centre on Thursday, 9th August last.

Competition between the schools was very keen. Colaiste Bhride Carnew are current Irish Schools champions, winning both the Hoofprints League and the Gain All-Ireland Showjumping Championships at Enniscorthy in May. St Finian’s College Mullingar, Kilkenny College and Loreto College Mullingar are all veterans of Hickstead, while the new challengers  from Newbridge College have made a name for themselves and are highly respected by the other schools.

On this occasion Kilkenny College were to carry off both the Junior and Senior Team Competitions, while Alyssa O’Neill of Newbridge College won the Senior Individual, with Jeremy Cairns and Nicola Phelan of Kilkenny College winning both the Junior Individual and the Coilog Speed Competition. Best Turned Out Team was awarded to the Newbridge College team of Alyssa O’Neill, Aisling Doyle, Louise Morrison and Bobbie Mc Donnell.

Newbridge College had joint winners in Best Lady Riders with Alyssa O’Neill and Aisling Doyle carrying off the honours. Best Gentleman Rider was won by Robert Tector of Kilkenny College. Trophies and rosettes were presented before the riders started the long journey home. The disappointment of not going to Hickstead had been replaced by a very exciting day of schools showjumping.
